The Innovative Leader #2

Back to trying to post weekly some thoughts from the book The Innovative Leader... there are some really thought-provoking chapters, and the book is really showing me some areas where I can really improve. Here are some thoughts from the chapter "Set Drastic Expectations":

* Most business leaders plan for modest incremental growth and set expectations they are confident can be achieved.
* Problem #1 w/this approach is that it reinforces incrementalism - no incentive here to look for big opportunities.
* Problem #2 - companies, just like children, tend to conform to the expectations set for them.
* Outstanding companies set outstanding expectations: average expectations encourage people to think and act averagely, while drastic expectations encourage people to think innovatively and to act like entrepreneurs.
